Renault’s performance division, Alpine, plans to introduce two electric convertible models, the A110 and A310, by 2030. This development comes at a time when many traditional convertible models are disappearing from the market. According to a report from the UK publication Autocar, these new roadsters will aim to compete against established names, including Porsche.
The new-generation A110 will maintain the model’s legacy of being lightweight and agile, ensuring that it appeals to enthusiasts looking for performance. In contrast, the A310 is expected to adopt a more modern aesthetic, moving away from retro styling while maintaining similar proportions to the A110. While the A110 is likely to remain a two-seater, the A310 may offer up to four seats, positioning itself as a competitor against the Ford Mustang in the sports car segment.
Alpine’s strategy to expand its lineup includes not only these two convertibles but also the recently launched A290 hot hatch, which is based on the Renault 5 electric hatch. Additionally, the A390 coupe SUV is set to make its way to Australia, and the company is developing larger SUV models as well. This diversified approach aims to enhance Alpine’s presence in various automotive categories.
Changing Landscape for Convertibles
The introduction of electric convertibles is a noteworthy move in an industry where many manufacturers are scaling back their drop-top offerings. Audi has discontinued all its convertibles, BMW is phasing out the Z4, and Mercedes-Benz has reduced its convertible lineup significantly. Currently, only two electric convertibles are available in Australia: the MG Cyberster and the Maserati GranCabrio Folgore.
As the market evolves, the addition of the A110 and A310 roadsters is a significant statement from Alpine. This move not only aims to fill gaps in their product range but also to challenge competitors like Porsche, which is developing an all-electric version of the Boxster.
Alpine’s commitment to producing these electric convertibles illustrates a broader trend towards electrification in the automotive industry. As consumer preferences shift, manufacturers are increasingly exploring innovative designs and sustainable technologies to capture market interest.
With the ambitious goal of launching two electric models within the next few years, Alpine is positioning itself as a forward-thinking player in the sports car market, appealing to both traditional enthusiasts and new customers seeking sustainable options.
