UPDATE: Tourists are facing an urgent safety warning as the iconic Great Ocean Road in Australia becomes increasingly hazardous due to anticipated extreme heat this summer. The 664 km stretch, renowned for its breathtaking views, attracts over 6 million visitors annually, but officials are alerting travelers to the hidden dangers posed by the cliffs along this popular route.
As temperatures rise, sections of the road, which run alongside limestone cliffs, are at greater risk of collapse. The Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority has issued the warning in conjunction with their annual Cliff Safety Month, emphasizing that this holiday season poses heightened risks due to the dry conditions following a wet spring.
This year has already seen three major incidents: in January near the Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club, in June at Demons Bluff, and in August at Addiscot Beach (Jarosite Point). These events raise serious concerns about the stability of the cliffs, which can appear solid yet harbor hidden dangers.
In a tragic incident in 2021, a 30-metre cliff face collapsed near Bells Beach, resulting in one death and injuries to six others. The dangers are real; even seemingly stable cliffs can have loose rocks and voids that are not visible. As Caleb Hurrell, the coastal reserves manager, stated, “These landscapes are beautiful, but they’re also alive. We’re seeing big movements and tiny ones, both can be dangerous.”
The erosion caused by wild winds, waves, and rain has already impacted many attractions along this scenic route. The iconic London Bridge arch formation suffered a sudden collapse in 1990, stranding tourists, while the 12 Apostles rock formation has diminished from eight to seven due to collapses in 2005 and 2009.
To ensure safety while exploring this stunning coastline, visitors are urged to adhere to a few essential guidelines:
1. Stay away from cliffs and caves.
2. Stick to designated paths.
3. Follow all warning signs.
4. Keep friends and family safe.
Authorities stress the importance of giving cliffs space and following posted signs to avoid potential dangers. “We want everyone to enjoy the coast and get home safely,” Hurrell emphasized.
With the summer heat intensifying, this warning is especially critical for families planning to visit. Travelers are encouraged to remain vigilant and prioritize safety while taking in the breathtaking scenery of the Great Ocean Road.
As the situation develops, stay tuned for further updates and ensure your trip is both safe and enjoyable. Share this urgent alert with fellow travelers to keep everyone informed.
