URGENT UPDATE: Australian playwright Claudia Shnier is set to premiere her powerful new production, Split Ends, in Melbourne from January 6-10 and in Sydney from January 20-24. The show, which has already garnered significant attention in the UK, explores deep themes of OCD, coercive control, and the emotional aftermath of abusive relationships.
“It really feels like when I perform this show, I am bleeding out on stage,”
Shnier shared, emphasizing the vulnerability she brings to her performance. Audiences have been captivated by her raw honesty, with many expressing deep emotional connections to her story.
Originally from Sydney, Shnier’s journey to writing Split Ends began during her Master’s studies in London. The play is rooted in her own experiences, using the metaphor of hair and split ends to illustrate the control and powerlessness she felt in her past relationship. “I thought the metaphor for hair, specifically the removal of it, is such an incredible metaphor for the powerlessness I felt in this abusive relationship,” she explained.
The production uniquely blends puppetry, music, and dark humor, creating an engaging theatrical experience that challenges audience expectations. Shnier noted that she starts the show in a stand-up comedy style, only to transition into more serious themes—a tactic designed to elicit a profound emotional response.
“I’ve crafted the piece to intentionally play with the audience’s expectations and emotions,” she said. The show has been described as a “very skilful punch in the gut,” highlighting its potential to resonate deeply with viewers.
Shnier’s experience performing in the Edinburgh Fringe festival has further informed her approach. She plans to expand her team for the Australian run, allowing her to focus more on audience engagement and the emotional impact of the show. “One of the reviews I received said that this show deserves to be seen and understood, and I couldn’t have summed it up better myself,” she stated.
Tickets for Split Ends can be purchased for its Melbourne run at The Motley Bauhaus via eventfinda.com.au, and for Sydney at Qtopia through tickets.qtopiasydney.com.au.
Don’t miss this chance to experience a compelling narrative that not only entertains but also validates the struggles of many. Shnier is eager to share her story with Australian audiences, as she believes it offers a chance for empowerment and healing.
