UPDATE: An arson attack has struck Gosnells Gifts store on Albany Highway in Maddington, as the Serious and Organised Crime Squad investigates ties to the escalating illicit tobacco trade in Western Australia. This alarming incident occurred around 5:00 AM on Thursday, with two unidentified men setting fire to the store’s front before fleeing in a white Mitsubishi Lancer ES.
Authorities were alerted to the blaze at approximately 8:30 AM, after firefighters extinguished the flames. The extent of the damage remains unknown, but the police have confirmed that the premises is linked to illicit tobacco products. “The investigation remains ongoing,” a police spokesman stated.
This incident is part of a troubling trend, following two separate arson attacks targeting businesses in Perth late last month. Just days before, on November 28, a beauty salon in Orelia was engulfed in flames after a white Ford Territory was set alight inside the premises at about 4:25 AM. That salon was also previously associated with illicit tobacco and illegal vape products, according to Det-Sen. Sgt Ryan McGuggon of the drug and firearm squad.
Another attack occurred on November 24, damaging a tobacco business in Midland. Police officials have characterized these firebombings as intimidation tactics used by criminals linked to the illicit tobacco trade. The recent escalation illustrates the dangerous lengths to which individuals will go to protect their profits and silence competition.
The community is urged to remain vigilant as police work to apprehend the suspects. The investigation into the Maddington store fire is ongoing, and authorities are asking anyone with information to step forward.
As these incidents continue to unfold, the public should stay informed about further developments in this dangerous and evolving situation. Law enforcement is focusing on preventing additional attacks and ensuring the safety of local businesses.
