Cyient Semiconductors has achieved a significant milestone by qualifying for a crucial contract related to the modernization of the Semi-Conductor Laboratory (SCL) in Mohali, India. This initiative, valued at approximately ₹4,500 crore, aligns with the Government of India’s efforts under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), which aims to enhance domestic semiconductor production, reduce import dependencies, and foster an accessible fabrication environment for startups and academic institutions.
Under this contract, Cyient Semiconductors will supply and qualify essential technology intellectual properties (IPs) and design enablement processes. Specifically, the company will focus on three foundational process technologies: RF-CMOS, BCD (HV LDMOS), and CMOS Image Sensor (CIS). These technologies are integral to the upgraded 8-inch manufacturing line at SCL, which is expected to support various sectors, including industrial, automotive, energy, sensing, and connectivity.
Strengthening India’s Semiconductor Ecosystem
The project represents a pivotal moment for Cyient Semiconductors in its ambition to become a leading turnkey provider of application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) in India. The company’s Executive Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, Krishna Bodanapu, expressed pride in the technical qualification for this strategic project, viewing it as a validation of the firm’s engineering capabilities and its comprehensive portfolio of intellectual properties. He stated, “Our collaboration with SCL will accelerate India’s semiconductor self-reliance by delivering high-value silicon solutions in digital, analog mixed signal, and power domains.”
Cyient Semiconductors’ CEO, Suman Narayan, highlighted the opportunity presented by this contract, emphasizing the company’s deep expertise in RF-CMOS, BCD (HV LDMOS), and CIS technologies. He noted, “We see this as both a responsibility and an opportunity to help strengthen India’s semiconductor ecosystem.” The collaboration will not only enhance the capabilities of SCL but also support a broader range of applications in the future, potentially benefiting sectors such as smart energy, automotive electronics, industrial control systems, imaging, sensing technologies, and low-power IoT devices.
Future Prospects and Industry Impact
Cyient Semiconductors, headquartered in Hyderabad, offers custom ASIC and ASSP solutions, focusing on analog mixed-signal, intelligent power, and advanced semiconductor platforms. With design centers located in India, Belgium, and the United States, the company serves global clients across various industries, including data centers, robotics, and automotive.
By qualifying for this important modernization project, Cyient Semiconductors aims to position itself as a key player in the evolving landscape of India’s semiconductor industry. The company’s advancements in technology are expected to contribute significantly to the nation’s goal of achieving self-sufficiency in semiconductor manufacturing, thereby reducing reliance on foreign imports.
As the semiconductor sector continues to grow in demand globally, initiatives like the one at SCL highlight the importance of local expertise and innovation. The successful implementation of this project could pave the way for broader applications and enhance India’s standing in the competitive global semiconductor market.
