two-11-year-olds-charged-in-geraldton-bushfire-devastation

UPDATE: In a shocking turn of events, two 11-year-old boys have been charged with igniting a bushfire that wreaked havoc in Geraldton, Western Australia, this week. The fire, which broke out in the suburb of Spalding on November 28, destroyed one home and severely damaged several properties, forcing residents to evacuate.

The boys are alleged to have lit the fire that quickly spread into surrounding bushland. Despite the initial containment efforts by firefighters, the fire rekindled on Sunday due to fierce winds, with gusts reaching 80 km/h starting at around 5:20 AM on Monday. Authorities warn that the flames posed a serious threat to lives and numerous properties in the northern suburbs of the city.

As the fire raged, schools closed, and thousands faced power outages, prompting urgent evacuations. A police spokesperson confirmed that four juveniles were identified during the investigation, leading to the two boys being referred to the Juvenile Justice Team under the charge of Breach of Duty.

“Lighting fires is extremely dangerous and can put lives and property at risk,” the police representative stated. They also expressed gratitude to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) and local volunteers for their rapid response in safeguarding the Geraldton community.

The human toll of this tragedy is heartbreaking. A GoFundMe page has been established for victims Nic Morgan and Lyn Bartlett, who returned from medical appointments to find their home in ruins. “Devastatingly, they have lost absolutely everything,” family member Allee Bartlett shared. “They left their home with only the clothes on their backs.” Tragically, their beloved pet cat, Smudge, did not survive the fire, leaving the family shattered.

In addition, Goodstart Early Learning Wonthella has initiated a fundraiser for staff member Gail and her daughter, whose home suffered significant damage. “In a single night, their world changed — they lost precious belongings and the safety every family deserves,” a spokesperson stated. Donations will directly aid in replacing essential items and securing safe accommodation.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about suspicious behavior related to bushfires to contact Crime Stoppers. A reward of up to $25,000 is available for tips leading to the identification and conviction of the arsonists.

As the community rallies in support of those affected, the ongoing investigation highlights the urgent need for vigilance against fire-related incidents. Residents are encouraged to remain alert and report any concerns to prevent further tragedy.
