UPDATE: The Bendigo Spirit delivered a stunning performance on November 3, 2023, demolishing the Geelong Venom by an impressive 35 points, with a final score of 93-58. This victory marks the Spirit’s largest win in over a decade, showcasing their dominance in the WNBL.
In a “home away from home” game at Ballarat’s Selkirk Stadium, the Spirit silenced any doubts about their championship potential after losing key players during the off-season. Despite the absence of Marianna Tolo, who is currently pregnant, and others like Sami Whitcomb and Kelly Wilson, the Spirit’s record now stands at 8-2.
The standout performance of the night came from Kelsey Rees, who achieved her first double-double in the WNBL with 14 points and 11 rebounds, including three offensive boards. Coach Kennedy Kereama praised Rees’ commitment, stating her hard work off the court is paying off.
Co-captain Kelsey Griffin led the charge with a stellar all-around game, scoring 19 points while also contributing 11 rebounds, three assists, one block, and five steals. This was Griffin’s second game this season with at least five steals, further solidifying her impact on both ends of the court.
The offensive load was well-distributed, with five players scoring in double figures, including league MVP contender Isobel Borlase and import Meg McConnell who added 19 and 16 points respectively. The Spirit’s ability to dominate the boards was evident as they out-rebounded Geelong 50-36 and shot 11-of-27 from three-point range compared to Geelong’s dismal 3-of-25.
By half-time, the Spirit established an 18-point lead, holding a score of 45-27. They continued their assault in the second half, outscoring Geelong 48-31.
“I’m really proud of our group… we play hard and we play for each other,” Griffin said after the match. She emphasized the importance of continuous improvement, noting, “We know the WNBL is a marathon and championships aren’t won in December.”
The Spirit’s victory comes on the heels of an announcement from the WNBL regarding the addition of the Tasmania Jewels for the upcoming season, expanding the league to nine teams. WNBL CEO Jennie Sager expressed excitement about the growth of women’s basketball in Australia. “This is the beginning of something truly special,” she stated, highlighting the new opportunities for young female athletes.
Looking ahead, the Spirit will face the Southside Flyers in Melbourne on Sunday, November 5, 2023, as they aim to build on this momentum. The team’s impressive performance against Geelong not only boosts their confidence but also re-establishes them as a formidable contender for the title this season.
Stay tuned for more updates as the WNBL season progresses and the Spirit continue their quest for championship glory.
