UPDATE: Fire crews in New South Wales are on high alert as a significant wind change threatens to exacerbate ongoing bushfires, which have already destroyed 12 homes in Koolewong. NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Trent Curtin expressed urgent concerns, stating, “We’re seeing a band of lightning come across the state. That lightning is looking to head towards the Central Coast, and we’re concerned about the wind change that’s expected to come through overnight.” The Commissioner noted that despite warnings being downgraded to “watch and act,” Koolewong remains a priority for fire crews.
The anticipated storm could bring damaging winds and lightning, complicating firefighting efforts. Although temperatures are expected to decrease across much of NSW on Sunday, the heat is set to intensify in northern Australia and Western Australia early next week. This fluctuation in weather patterns could provide an “excellent opportunity” for firefighters to gain control over the raging fires, according to Mr. Curtin.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has publicly commended emergency services for their relentless efforts on the ground and in the air, stating, “My thoughts are with residents affected by the fires.”
In addition to the destruction in Koolewong, more than a dozen homes, including shacks and outbuildings, were damaged during an out-of-control fire at Dolphin Sands on Tasmania’s east coast on Friday. Two firefighters sustained injuries while battling the blaze, which has since been contained, though residents are still unable to return due to dangerous conditions.
