new-wine-destination-in-launceston-opens-with-local-flair

UPDATE: A new wine destination has just opened in Launceston, Tasmania, transforming the historic City Park Milk Bar into a vibrant wine room. Matt and Sarah Hurst, owners of Highclare Estate, are welcoming visitors to their establishment at the corner of Cameron and Tamar Streets. This exciting development promises a unique blend of local wines, tastings, and a commitment to supporting regional producers.

The couple expressed their enthusiasm for the location, emphasizing its rich heritage. “It’s a piece of heritage for Launceston, and we feel a lot of responsibility in taking it on,” said Sarah Hurst. The former milk bar, once a nostalgic spot for ice creams and milkshakes, has been revamped to feature self-serve grazing boards showcasing local delicacies. Plans are in place to add an ice cream freezer in the future, further connecting the venue to its past.

Matt Hurst highlighted the importance of local products, stating, “Tourists come here to experience Tasmania, not French cheeses.” The couple aims to contribute to Launceston’s reputation as a City of Gastronomy through their wine offerings and food pairings. Their vineyard, established seven years ago, has already made a mark with its wines, including pinot noir, pinot gris, and blanc de noir.

As the holiday season approaches, the couple is excited about releasing new wine varieties, including a reserve pinot noir, a blanc de blancs, and a non-vintage cuvée, all set to launch by December 2023. Additionally, an Alsace-style pinot gris is anticipated for early 2026. Their recently introduced sparkling rosé debuted at the popular Festivale and received rave reviews, designed for those moments of celebration.

“We’re all so busy,” said Sarah Hurst. “It’s nice just to stop and have a glass of rosé and actually feel like you’re having a bit of a celebration.” The Hurst’s dedication to local winemakers is evident in their selection process, ensuring that each wine meets their expectations for quality and taste.

Since opening, the venue has attracted a diverse crowd, from tourists exploring Launceston to locals unwinding after work. “We’ve seen a large cross-section of society pass through,” Matt Hurst noted, referencing the after-work patrons enjoying a glass before heading home.

This new venture not only revitalizes a beloved Launceston landmark but also underscores the community’s commitment to local gastronomy. As the Hurst couple continues to build their brand and engage with visitors, their story is sure to resonate with those who value local culture and community.

For those interested in experiencing this new wine destination, the Hurst’s wine room is now open, providing an inviting atmosphere for wine enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. With its rich history and commitment to Tasmanian flavors, this venue is set to become a must-visit spot in Launceston.

Stay tuned for updates as the Hurst couple expands their offerings and solidifies their place in Tasmania’s vibrant wine scene.
