UPDATE: A natural disaster has been declared at Lake Macquarie as the Redhead fire engulfs over 90 hectares, triggering urgent safety measures and support for affected residents. This declaration comes amid widespread fires that have devastated more than 5,000 hectares across the region, including areas north, south, and west of Newcastle.

Firefighters are currently battling the blaze, which at one point threatened a local nursing home and forced the closure of the Fernleigh Track connecting Redhead and Whitebridge. Over 150 firefighters have been deployed, supported by aerial water-bombing operations, as the situation remains critical.

As of Tuesday evening, December 9, 2023, Mayor Adam Shultz confirmed that the NSW government’s declaration opens up crucial financial assistance for the local community. This includes support for emergency accommodation and grants aimed at helping low-income or uninsured residents replace essential household items.

“The assistance we receive will be vital for the community’s recovery during this challenging time, especially with Christmas approaching,” said Federal Energy Management Minister Kristy McBain.

Residents in the affected areas, particularly in Dudley, Whitebridge, and Gateshead, are being advised to stay vigilant and ready to implement their bushfire survival plans as conditions can change rapidly. The NSW Recovery Minister, Janelle Saffin, underscored the distress this disaster has caused, stating, “The Lake Macquarie community has endured a frightening and disruptive period of bushfires.”

Meanwhile, in the Upper Hunter, another fire near Merriwa has scorched over 12,500 hectares, with increasing activity noted along its southern edge. Residents along Flags Road have been warned to prepare for evacuation if necessary, as the fire poses an immediate threat to properties in the area.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and are advising residents to stay informed and heed emergency services’ guidance. The situation at Lake Macquarie remains dynamic, with crews actively engaged on the fire ground as they work to contain the blaze and protect communities.
