UPDATE: In a heartwarming celebration, Olga Wheeler, a remarkable 106 years old, marked her milestone birthday on December 4 at Estia Health in Tea Gardens. Known as the oldest resident of Port Stephens, Olga celebrated with a vibrant Great Gatsby themed party that left her beaming with joy.
Olga, who still enjoys a glass of Jim Beam mixed with dry ginger ale, has lived a life filled with adventure and resilience. Born in Woodstock, NSW, Olga has witnessed significant events, from wars to natural disasters, in her extraordinary lifetime. Her daughter, Lyn Mildwater, shared that Olga has always been a giver, often helping others while putting their needs before her own.
“I’ve worked hard all my life, I’ve seen depression, I’ve seen wars, fires, droughts,” Olga stated, reflecting on her life’s journey. “I’ve had my ups and downs and I’ve been sick, but that’s life, isn’t it?”
Once a competitive runner, Olga has also dedicated her time to volunteering at local hospitals and caring for animals, including rescuing baby kangaroo joeys. In a memorable incident, she chased one of her rescued joeys into her car, showcasing her love for animals and the unique experiences that have colored her life.
Living independently until the age of 101, Olga moved closer to her daughter in 2019, continuing her passion for gardening even in her new residence. Her love for flowers is evident, as she tends to African Violets at the nursing home, sharing her passion with staff and fellow residents.
The staff at Estia Health made this year’s birthday truly special, throwing an elaborate party that celebrated her incredible journey. Last year, they even surprised her with a horse visit, highlighting the affection they have for their beloved resident.
As she reflects on her long life, Olga credits her good health to simple living and vitamins. “Mum would take some vitamins and that’s about it, her health is pretty good,” Lyn noted, emphasizing Olga’s spirited approach to life.
