The Australian Museum of Performing Arts is set to unveil a groundbreaking exhibition titled “DIVAdom,” which pays tribute to the iconic figures who have shaped the world of performance art. Opening on March 14, 2024, in Melbourne, the exhibition will run until April 26, 2024, showcasing over hundreds of items that celebrate the resilience and ambition of legendary divas from various eras.
Curated by Kate Bailey, the exhibition aims to explore what it means to be a diva—defined as a goddess in Italian. Bailey emphasizes that the featured performers have not only challenged societal norms but have also harnessed their creativity to redefine the term “diva” throughout history. “At the heart of this exhibition is a story of iconic performers who with creativity, courage and ambition have challenged the status quo and used their voice and their art to redefine and reclaim the diva,” Bailey noted.
Among the remarkable items on display are costumes and personal artifacts from some of the most celebrated divas in history. Visitors can view Maria Callas‘s stage ensemble from her 1952 title role in “Norma,” as well as Rihanna‘s striking high-fashion Papal look, complete with a jewel-encrusted robe and matching mitre worn at the 2018 Met Gala. The exhibition will also feature the elegant black-and-gold dress worn by Whitney Houston when she received three Grammy Awards for “The Bodyguard” soundtrack in 1994.
The exhibition does not solely focus on international superstars; it also highlights Australia’s own contributions to the world of performance. Notable Australian divas such as Dame Nellie Melba, Kylie Minogue, Peter Allen, and Olivia Newton-John will be prominently featured.
