URGENT UPDATE: Vandals have defaced a police memorial in Melbourne, spraying offensive slogans overnight in what authorities describe as a shocking act of prejudice. The incident, which took place on October 13, 2023, included phrases like “good cop = dead cop,” “death to Australia,” and “ACAB (all cops are bastards)” painted on the memorial dedicated to fallen officers.
Acting Commander Belinda Jones of Victoria Police condemned the act, stating, “To think that someone would do this at a time when we’ve recently lost two of our own is disgusting and beyond belief.” The police emblem was also smeared with red paint, prompting a swift response from authorities, who seized a can of paint at the scene.
The graffiti was removed within two hours, but this is not the first time the memorial has been targeted. A similar incident occurred on December 13, 2022, also featuring the phrase “ACAB.” That case is still under investigation, and Commander Jones indicated that measures such as surveillance cameras may be implemented to prevent future vandalism, particularly on significant dates.
Premier Jacinta Allan expressed outrage over the incident, calling it an “incredible slur” on the dedicated work of police officers. “It’s occurring far too often,” she told ABC Radio. “Especially at a time when the police family and our community are grieving the murder of two police officers just a few months ago.”
In a powerful statement, Wayne Gatt, secretary of the Police Association, emphasized that such attacks will not diminish the contributions of the fallen officers. “These are the sentiments of a few insignificant people whose lives are punctuated by insignificant acts like this,” he said. “They’re nobodies going nowhere.”
The community’s response is one of shock and grief, as many rally behind their police force during this difficult time. The emotional toll of the recent loss of police officers in the line of duty has heightened sensitivity around these acts of vandalism, making this incident all the more egregious.
As investigations continue, the public is urged to report any information related to the vandalism. Authorities are committed to ensuring the memorial is protected and that those responsible are brought to justice.
