Rey Magnerio wins the 2025 The Gold Rush for jockey William Pike

UPDATE: In a stunning display of skill, jockey William Pike has won the $1.5 million Gold Rush at Ascot, partnering with Rey Magnerio for trainer Robbie Griffiths. This victory marks Pike’s second win in the race’s four-year history, further solidifying his reputation as Western Australia’s premier jockey.

The race unfolded dramatically as Pike quickly positioned the $6 favorite in fourth place, just three lengths behind the leader, Overpass ($4.80). Pike’s strategy was clear: he was determined to secure another victory, having previously won the inaugural Gold Rush aboard The Astrologist.

As the horses approached the home turn, Overpass surged ahead, leaving Rey Magnerio with work to do. Yet, with just 150 meters to go, Pike intensified his efforts, guiding Rey Magnerio to the front within 100 meters. Despite a late push from Cosmic Crusader ($2.90), Rey Magnerio held on to win by a long neck, impressively achieving this victory at his first attempt over 1400 meters.

Griffiths expressed his joy, stating,

“Go Rey! What fun he’s been for all of us and he just has a crack.”

He added, “Willie thought he was stiff not to win the Winterbottom, and this was like Winterbottom number two.” The stakes were high, with Griffiths making the bold decision to supplement Rey Magnerio for the Gold Rush after a strong performance in the Winterbottom Stakes just two weeks prior.

The late entry fee of just over $30,000 now seems trivial compared to the winner’s prize of $822,000. Griffiths noted, “It was such an easy decision to say let’s wait two weeks and have another crack.” He praised Rey Magnerio’s adaptability to the West Australian climate, underscoring the horse’s impressive performance.

Griffiths also credited stable foreman Reid Balfour for expertly managing Rey Magnerio’s training during their time away. “He’s such a great horseman,” Griffiths remarked, highlighting Balfour’s significant contributions to the horse’s success.

Pike’s victory in the Gold Rush capped off an exceptional day, giving him a total of four wins on the card, including triumphs on Soldanelle ($2.90), Magna’s Choice ($2.60), and Storyville ($6). Reflecting on Rey Magnerio’s performance, Pike commented, “I was really happy with his run… he waits when he hits the front,” demonstrating his deep understanding of the horse’s racing style.

As the celebration unfolds, all eyes are now on the upcoming events, with Griffiths confirming plans to return in April 2024 for the premier sprinting event, The Quokka, at 1200 meters.

This thrilling victory not only showcases Pike’s extraordinary talent but also highlights the growing significance of the Gold Rush in Australian horse racing. Rey Magnerio’s performance today stands as a testament to the potential for greatness in the sport, making waves across the racing community.
