During a pre-game event on March 14, 2024, prior to the Illawarra Hawks’ victory over the Brisbane Bullets, alumni and guests gathered to discuss the impactful work of the Yerbury Lab. Researchers from the University of Wollongong (UOW) were present to encourage attendees to support the lab’s initiatives, which are focused on groundbreaking research into motor neurone disease (MND) in memory of the late Professor Justin Yerbury.

The event, which coincided with the Hawks’ alumni round, saw a turnout of many former players and their families. Among the attendees was UOW Vice Chancellor Max Lu, who expressed pride in the internationally significant research being conducted at the university. Lu highlighted the lab’s potential to change lives, stating, “We are committed to continuing the legacy of Professor Yerbury and advancing the fight against MND.”

Awareness and Support for Research

Editor Kathy Sharpe of the Illawarra Mercury emphasized the importance of raising awareness alongside financial support for the Yerbury Lab. “While we are appealing to Hawks fans and the wider community to donate to the lab through the MND Research Fund, it is essential that we also use our platform to create awareness,” she explained. “Many people don’t realize that the research taking place right here in Wollongong, carrying on the momentum started by Professor Yerbury, has the potential to change people’s lives.”

In addition to the call for donations, Sharpe noted that the event served to highlight the ongoing commitment to MND research in the region. The collaboration between the Illawarra Hawks and UOW aims not only to raise funds but also to foster a community that supports scientific advancements.

The Yerbury Lab, established in memory of the former Hawks player, conducts research that could lead to significant breakthroughs in understanding and treating MND. As the community rallies around this cause, the hope is that increased awareness will drive more support, both financially and through community engagement.

The Illawarra Hawks’ alumni round served as a perfect backdrop for this appeal, uniting former players and supporters around a common goal: to honor Professor Yerbury’s legacy and contribute to life-saving research.
