URGENT UPDATE: A cycling advocate is calling for immediate state government investment in better local cycling routes across the western suburbs of Melbourne. Pierro Varro, representing Bike West, emphasized that while Infrastructure Victoria has proposed a major cycling corridor between Werribee and Footscray, a robust network of connected paths is essential to encourage cycling.

“People are unlikely to travel the entire distance from Werribee to Footscray,” Varro stated, noting that a comfortable cycling trip for most is around five kilometers. His message is clear: enhancing local cycling infrastructure is crucial to motivate residents to abandon their cars and opt for bicycles, thereby improving traffic flow in Melbourne.

Areas like Wyndham and Melton are particularly in need of these upgrades, as a significant percentage of their population is under 18 years old. Varro advocates for cycling networks to be built around schools, allowing children to travel independently. “This gives kids the ability to get to school without needing a ride from parents,” he explained.

The benefits extend beyond education; it also empowers young people to access part-time jobs without relying on expensive transport options. “When kids turn 18, they often rush to buy cars, which can be a financial burden,” Varro added.

With Melbourne’s population rapidly growing, investing in cycling infrastructure is becoming increasingly urgent. Reports confirm that the state government has upgraded the Federation Trail between Werribee and Brooklyn, enhancing accessibility for cyclists. This upgrade is set to connect with a new 2.5km elevated veloway along Footscray Road, representing a significant step forward for cycling infrastructure in the region.

The call to action is now louder than ever. Varro and Bike West urge residents and officials to recognize the importance of developing a comprehensive cycling network. As the demand for sustainable transport options rises, the time to act is NOW.
