BREAKING NEWS: Austin’s beloved Tex-Mex restaurant, El Mercado, will serve its final dinner on December 17, 2023. The iconic eatery, a staple in the community for over 40 years, made the announcement via social media, marking the end of an era for local food lovers.
The restaurant, located at 302 South 1st Street, has been cherished for its authentic Tex-Mex flavors, including hot fajitas, cheese enchiladas, and smoked brisket tacos. Customers are urged to visit before the doors close for renovations, as the Villegas family, who have operated El Mercado, transitions ownership to Stephen Shallcross of 2 Dine 4 Hospitality Group.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, the restaurant shared, “El Mercado Restaurant & Cantina South will close its doors on December 17th, during the holidays, to undergo much-needed TLC and deferred maintenance.” Shallcross plans to revamp the space, enhancing its neighborhood charm while introducing aesthetic upgrades, including new tables, chairs, and vibrant Mexican decor.
The team assures patrons that the transformation will respect the original spirit of El Mercado. “Selling to De Nada Taco will preserve some of our cherished memories within the building,” the team stated. “It will also give my neighbors a place to call home, rather than see high-priced condos or apartments built on the property.”
Customers can look forward to the reopening of the rebranded restaurant, De Nada Taco, expected in mid-January 2024, pending the arrival of new supplies. COO Eric de Valpine confirmed that beloved menu items, including the famous salsa, will remain unchanged.
The Villegas family expressed deep gratitude for the community’s support over the decades. “Thank you to all, not only for being customers but also for being my friends. I will miss you all so much!” they shared.
While El Mercado South closes, the restaurant’s second location at 7414 Burnet Road will continue to operate under the ownership of Gerald Stone, ensuring that loyal fans can still enjoy their favorite dishes.
As this cherished Tex-Mex spot prepares for its last service, it’s an urgent reminder of the community’s bond with local businesses. Be sure to visit El Mercado South before December 17 to savor the flavors of a true Austin institution, and stay tuned for updates on the reopening of De Nada Taco.
