UPDATE: The City of Newcastle is taking a significant step forward in developing the long-awaited Richmond Vale Rail Trail, as officials move to acquire three crucial land parcels. This development is set to transform cycling and walking opportunities in the region, providing a 32-kilometre path that connects key areas.

Cyclists will soon have the chance to navigate through historic railway tunnels, traverse scenic bridges, and glide alongside vital wildlife habitats. The trail aims to link Kurri Kurri, Tarro, Minmi, and Shortland without the risks associated with riding on major highways like the Pacific Motorway and the Hunter Expressway.

Authorities confirmed that during a critical meeting in December, councillors voted to secure the necessary land in Minmi and Hexham. This acquisition is a pivotal milestone in a project that has been a regional priority for over a decade, initially proposed as part of the broader Shiraz to Shore cycle trail planned for 2024.

Labor councillor Deahnna Richardson emphasized the significance of this development, stating, “The Richmond Vale Rail Trail is an excellent example of adaptive reuse of an historic rail corridor.” She noted that the project will not only preserve important heritage aspects, like the railway tunnels, but also enhance pedestrian and cycling infrastructure crucial for community well-being.

Councillor Elizabeth Adamczyk echoed this sentiment, highlighting that the trail will provide a unique perspective on Newcastle’s rich natural environment. “It connects much-loved locations, including the RAMSAR-listed Hunter Wetlands at Shortland and the Rocky Knob Conservation Area at Black Hill,” she stated, stressing the environmental and community benefits.

The Richmond Vale Rail Trail is poised to become a vital asset for Newcastle and surrounding areas, promoting active transportation while fostering a connection to the region’s heritage. The council has actively advocated for this project since 2018, with a development application for construction having been approved in 2021.

As this project moves from concept to reality, local residents and visitors can anticipate new opportunities for outdoor activities and community engagement. The next steps will involve detailed planning and implementation of the trail, making it an exciting development to watch in the months ahead.
