The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held a naming ceremony on March 15, 2024, honoring the Tsang family’s contributions to the institution. The University has named two of its residence towers in recognition of alumni Mr. Terry Tsang and Mr. Terence Tsang for their significant donations that support education, research, and student development initiatives. Tower A will be officially recognized as the Tsang Chiu Sang Tower, while Tower B will be known as the Lam Po Yu Tower.
The ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Prof. Harry Shum, Chairman of the HKUST Council, Prof. Nancy Ip, President of HKUST, and the Tsang brothers themselves. Prof. Shum expressed deep appreciation for the Tsang family’s enduring commitment to the University, stating, “The Tsang brothers have consistently given back to their alma mater, supporting a wide range of university initiatives. Their actions set a powerful example for the next generation.”
Mr. Terry Tsang reflected on his family’s history with HKUST, mentioning that his father, Tsang Chiu-Sang, served at the University in its early years. He remarked, “I feel deeply honored to have been able to contribute to the University alongside him at different times.” His brother, Mr. Terence Tsang, emphasized a philosophy of care and commitment, stating, “I will care for my family through consistent and sustained actions and extend this philosophy to HKUST.”
Celebrating Generosity and Legacy
The Tsang brothers are not only accomplished entrepreneurs but also dedicated supporters of HKUST. They co-founded Mad Head Limited, a prominent mobile gaming company known for its flagship title, “Tower of Saviors,” which has achieved over 23 million downloads globally. Their journey with HKUST began in 1990, when their father joined as a campus security guard. His legacy continues to resonate within the University community, particularly through the support he provided during his lifetime.
In 2004, the family faced a significant loss when Mr. Tsang passed away. At that time, both Terry and Terence were still students. Thanks to HKUST’s emergency fund, they were able to complete their education. Their mother, Mrs. Lam Po-Yu, played a crucial role during this challenging period, ensuring that her sons’ education remained uninterrupted.
Following their graduation, the Tsang brothers actively engaged with HKUST by joining the Convocation Committee and supporting various alumni initiatives. Their contributions have included significant donations to the University’s Student Emergency Fund, which assists students facing unexpected financial difficulties.
Prof. Nancy Ip highlighted the importance of the Tsang brothers’ support, stating, “We are profoundly grateful for their leadership and for transforming their personal gratitude into a lasting legacy of support.” She noted that their commitment extends beyond financial contributions, as they actively mentor the next generation of leaders by sharing insights from their entrepreneurial experiences and providing job opportunities.
As HKUST celebrates its 35th anniversary, the naming of the Tsang Chiu Sang Tower and Lam Po Yu Tower serves as a powerful tribute to the Tsang family’s enduring legacy and commitment to education. The ceremony not only honors their past contributions but also inspires future generations to engage with and support the University community.
In summary, the recognition of the Tsang brothers and their family underscores the profound impact of alumni support on the growth and development of institutions like HKUST, fostering an environment of excellence, innovation, and community engagement.
