The Greater Des Moines Partnership has announced its policy priorities for 2026, focusing on key areas vital to economic and community development in Iowa. This agenda was crafted by the Partnership’s Government Policy Council, which represents over 7,200 Regional Chamber Members and more than 400 Investors. The new policy framework aims to enhance the region’s competitiveness and promote sustainable growth.

Key Priorities for Economic Development

The Partnership’s agenda emphasizes three main priorities: economic growth, workforce readiness, and housing. In terms of economic development, the organization recognizes the importance of attracting businesses and talent to Iowa. To this end, it advocates for the use of effective economic development tools and incentives. This includes support for state and local governments in creating a competitive tax environment and advancing a modernized tax structure that fosters growth for both businesses and nonprofits.

Workforce readiness is another critical focus area. The Partnership highlights the necessity for a skilled workforce to meet the needs of its investors and the broader Affiliate Chamber of Commerce network. Strategies to attract new talent, retain and upskill existing workers, and expand access to work-based learning opportunities, such as internships and apprenticeships, are central to this goal.

Addressing Housing Needs

Another significant aspect of the agenda is housing. The Partnership is committed to fostering the creation and expansion of diverse housing options. This includes advocating for funding and policies that encourage communities and employers to invest in both new and existing housing solutions for all residents of Iowa.

David Stark, Chief Government Affairs and Philanthropy Officer at UnityPoint Health and the 2026 Chair of the Partnership’s Government Policy Council, expressed optimism about the new priorities. “We look forward to building on our strong relationships with state leaders to move policies forward that help our communities and employers thrive,” he stated. Stark emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving shared goals, highlighting that the region’s success relies on unified efforts.
