BREAKING: Author Alexandria Burnham has officially launched her highly anticipated debut novel, Swallow, in a festive pirate-themed event in Parramatta. The launch, which took place earlier this month, marks a significant milestone for Burnham after a five-year writing journey.
The event, held in October 2023, featured a live band and maritime-inspired cuisine, immersing guests in the book’s adventurous spirit. Attendees received skull and crossbones flags as keepsakes, adding to the celebratory atmosphere surrounding the release of this historical fiction novel.
Set in the early nineteenth century, Swallow follows the gripping true story of William Swallow, a transported convict who was sentenced for petty larceny. Separated from his wife Susannah and young children in England, Swallow’s saga unfolds nine years later aboard the government vessel Cyprus, en route to the penal settlement in Macquarie Harbour, Australia.
Faced with harsh punishment, Swallow’s daring ambition drives him to lead a mutiny among fellow convicts, aiming to seize the ship and navigate back to England. This audacious attempt mirrors historical maritime events, drawing parallels to Captain Bligh’s remarkable journey after the Mutiny on the Bounty.
Burnham, known for her screenwriting in films such as Unsound and Nice Package, expressed her fascination with stories of outlaws and those living on society’s edges. “Australia often gravitates toward stories of outlaws and people on the margins,” she said, highlighting her commitment to bringing Swallow’s tale to life.
Since the official release in November 2023, Burnham has actively participated in bookstore signings and public engagements throughout Sydney. She is set to expand her promotional efforts with a visit to Tasmania in January 2024, where she will appear at The Pirate’s Festival in Eaglehawk Neck. This festival commemorates the anniversary of the seizure of the Seaflower, another ship tied to Swallow’s historical narrative.
Looking ahead, fans can expect more from Burnham, as she confirmed that the second book in the planned trilogy is already in development. Details of her future appearances will be available in the 2026 Hawkesbury Library events program.
“This is just the beginning for me as a novelist,” Burnham stated, emphasizing her excitement for the journey ahead.
