Zoran Milanović, the President of Croatia, awarded the prestigious Charter of the Republic of Croatia to the Western Australian Croatian Chamber of Commerce (WACCC) in a formal ceremony held at the President’s Office in Zagreb on March 6, 2024. The Charter recognizes the Chamber’s two decades of dedicated efforts in promoting trade, investment, and economic cooperation between Croatia and Australia.

Luke Jurčević, President of the WACCC, accepted the Charter on behalf of the organization. In his remarks, President Milanović emphasized the vital role of the Croatian diaspora in Australia, highlighting how many Croats have successfully integrated into their communities while maintaining connections to their homeland.

Strengthening Economic Ties

During the ceremony, Milanović acknowledged the challenges of fostering economic ties with a large economy like Australia. He stated, “Australia is a great country and a great economy. It requires significant effort and patience. Many seeds must be sown for something to eventually grow.” His comments underscored the dedication required to cultivate lasting economic relationships.

The recognition of the WACCC’s work comes at a time when the Chamber has been actively engaging in various initiatives, including the recent Croatian Film Festival held in Perth. This event, among others, serves to enhance cultural ties and promote Croatia as a dynamic and safe destination for investment.

Jurčević expressed gratitude for the honor, stating, “This recognition is a great honour for our Chamber and for the entire Croatian community in Western Australia. It confirms that two decades of voluntary work, dedication, and belief in the strength of Croatian–Australian economic cooperation have been worthwhile.” He reiterated the Chamber’s commitment to fostering stronger ties between the two nations.

Community Engagement and Initiatives

The WACCC plays a pivotal role in the integration and celebration of Croatian culture within the Western Australian community. Members actively participate in events such as the annual Croatian Statehood Day celebrations and support initiatives that spotlight the contributions of Croatian women to the local economy.

Alongside Jurčević, the ceremony was attended by notable figures including Richard Rodgers, the Australian Ambassador to Croatia, David Tudorović, the Honorary Croatian Consul to South Australia, and Zoran Šangut, the Croatian Consul in Perth. Logan Howlett, the Mayor of the City of Cockburn in Western Australia, also marked the occasion with his presence.

The recognition of the WACCC by the Croatian government not only highlights the Chamber’s achievements but also reinforces the importance of the Croatian community in Australia as a bridge between the two countries. The ongoing efforts to promote business and cultural exchanges are expected to yield further opportunities for collaboration.

The presentation of the Charter stands as a testament to the enduring connection between Croatia and its diaspora, showcasing the dedication of individuals and organizations in fostering economic and cultural links across continents.
