Chris Eubank Jr has been fined £10,000 by the British Boxing Board of Control for misusing social media. This penalty must be paid before Eubank is licensed to compete in his upcoming rematch against Conor Benn, scheduled for September 20, 2023. The fine follows a hearing held by the Board’s Southern Area Council, which scrutinized Eubank’s weight management practices during his previous bout against Benn at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The controversy arose when Eubank Jr posted footage on social media that implied he was using a sauna to lose weight. For the fight against Benn, Eubank was required to weigh in at 160 lbs and could not exceed a 10 lbs allowance on the morning of the fight. Although he successfully met the rehydration clause on fight day, Eubank missed the official weigh-in, registering at 160.05 lbs. The Board found that the implication of sauna use violated their regulations.

Despite the serious allegations, the inquiry concluded that Eubank was not guilty of using a sauna on the weigh-in day, but was still held accountable for improper social media conduct. The Southern Area Council stated, “Mr. Eubank Jnr. was found to be in breach of Regulation 25 for misuse of social media.” Along with the fine, he received a severe reprimand that will be documented in his file.

Eubank’s previous fight with Benn ended in victory, yet it came at a cost. Following the match, he was hospitalized due to dehydration, raising concerns about his ability to manage weight effectively in future bouts. As a result, the weight limit for his next fight will be closely monitored.

This incident is not Eubank’s first encounter with disciplinary action from the Board. Previously, he was fined £100,000 for an incident involving an egg during the promotional activities for their first fight.

As Eubank prepares for the rematch against Benn, the scrutiny surrounding his weight management and social media use continues to be a critical focus for both the athlete and the governing body.
