URGENT UPDATE: The construction of the Bunbury breakwater is officially completed, marking a significant milestone in a transformative $112 million waterfront project. Just shy of 500 meters long, this robust structure consists of 290,000 tonnes of core rock and 65,000 tonnes of armor, sourced from across Western Australia.
This breakthrough serves as a crucial foundation for the redevelopment of Bunbury’s waterfront, transitioning the area from a straightforward marine space to a vibrant hub for fishing and recreation. The plans include upgraded fishing facilities, improved public access, and possibly a boat lifting service aimed at boosting commercial marine activities.
Despite the upcoming implementation of new demersal fishing laws for West Australian anglers on January 1, 2026, which will restrict recreational fishing and impose a long-term ban on commercial activities, a new $4 million fishing facility is set to commence construction soon.
Ports Minister Stephen Dawson praised the completion of the breakwater, stating, “We’ve reached an exciting milestone with the structure of the breakwater and land reclamation now complete, creating a new footprint for the waterfront.” The breakwater is designed to bolster community and industrial use, ensuring a multifunctional space for residents and visitors alike.
Acting South West Minister Reece Whitby emphasized the potential this project brings: “Bunbury has long had an outstanding waterfront, and this project builds on that strength to enhance community use and create new opportunities.” He highlighted the ongoing efforts to realize the waterfront vision, pointing to remarkable transformations such as the Koombana Bay Foreshore renewal and upgrades to the Jetty Road causeway and Jetty Baths.
As this project unfolds, residents and visitors can anticipate a revitalized waterfront that will not only serve as a recreational space but also support local economic growth through increased commercial activity. This development is a crucial step in shaping the future of Bunbury, promising to draw more visitors and enhance community engagement.
