UPDATE: The racing world mourns the tragic loss of promising apprentice jockey Bronte Simpson, who died in a devastating car crash on the Castlereagh Highway near Mendooran on December 20, 2023, at approximately 9:15 PM. Simpson, just 24 years old, was driving her SUV when it veered off the road and collided with a tree. Despite the efforts of passing motorists who attempted to assist, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The young jockey, originally from Ballarat, had recently relocated to New South Wales to advance her career in racing. Simpson was apprenticed to Sara Ryan at Wyong before moving to Jane Clement’s stables in Tamworth. She celebrated her first win at Muswellbrook on May 2 and recorded a total of 14 career victories, with her latest win occurring at Warren on December 12.

“This is a devastating and tragic event. We’ve lost a member of our family,” stated Tony Crisafi, chief executive of the NSW Jockeys’ Association. He expressed deep condolences to Simpson’s family and emphasized the profound impact her death has had on her fellow young female riders, many of whom were close to her.

Simpson had just competed at the Dubbo Turf Club on Saturday, December 20, where she had five rides, four of which were for Clement. Over the past two months, she showcased her talent at various tracks including Wellington, Narromine, Mudgee, and Orange, gaining recognition in the racing community.

Her journey in racing was not without its challenges. Nearly two years ago, Simpson suffered severe injuries from a horse kick while working on the Central Coast. “Without warning this young horse kicked out and got me in the face,” she recalled, leading to surgery for a jaw injury. Despite the setback, she remained determined. “There was no way I was going to quit. I love the industry and always wanted to become a jockey,” she stated.

As the racing community grapples with this tragic loss, Crisafi assured that support would be provided to young riders affected by Simpson’s passing. “The association will wrap its arms around them and ensure they receive the right support to cope with this heartbreaking event.”

The impact of her untimely death resonates deeply within the racing community, highlighting both the fragility of life and the dedication of those who pursue their dreams in the sport. As tributes pour in, Simpson’s legacy will undoubtedly inspire future generations of jockeys.
