The Minnesota Vikings have placed center Ryan Kelly on injured reserve, concluding his season and raising concerns about the future of his NFL career. The decision follows Kelly’s third concussion of the year, sustained during the team’s 16-13 victory over the New York Giants on December 10, 2023.
At 32 years old, Kelly has experienced a total of six documented concussions since entering the league as a first-round draft pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 2016. Earlier this season, he spent nearly two months on injured reserve after being diagnosed with concussions in Weeks 2 and 4. After returning in Week 12, he switched helmet models and began wearing a Guardian Cap during games to enhance safety.
Kelly’s latest injury occurred in the second quarter of the game against the Giants, following what appeared to be a routine collision with linebacker Bobby Okereke. Coach Kevin O’Connell expressed deep respect for Kelly, stating, “So much respect for Ryan as a player and the way he took the amount of time he did and was fighting to get back on the field.” O’Connell noted the significant impact Kelly had on the team’s offense during his recent games.
The Vikings signed Kelly in March 2023 to a two-year contract worth $18 million. Throughout the season, he started in eight games and participated in a total of 314 offensive snaps. With Kelly now sidelined, backup Michael Jurgens is expected to step into the starting position as the Vikings prepare for their upcoming matchup against the Lions.
As the Vikings navigate the remainder of the season, the focus will inevitably shift to the health and safety of their players, particularly as they contend with the ongoing challenges associated with concussions in professional football.
