URGENT UPDATE: A major holiday warning has been issued to Australians as police uncover a stash of stolen e-bikes and scooters in Varsity Lakes, Gold Coast. Authorities have charged a 37-year-old man after a search of his home on Christmas Eve revealed five stolen e-bikes, two e-scooters, a bicycle, and illegal drugs.
Queensland Police have been closely monitoring a surge in e-bike and e-scooter thefts from local shopping centers when they executed the search. The operation was prompted by recent thefts, including an incident on November 30, when the suspect allegedly stole a battery from an e-bike at Varsity Lakes Station. Less than a week later, he reportedly took an e-bike from a shopping center in Burleigh Waters.
With the popularity of battery-powered vehicles skyrocketing—sales and imports of e-bikes have nearly tripled in Australia since 2020, according to UNSW expert Milad Haghani—the risk of theft has also surged. As families gear up for the holiday season, Sergeant Alexander Collette is urging riders to take precautions.
“Thieves are opportunistic and will target bikes, scooters, vehicles, and houses,” Sgt Collette stated. “This serves as a reminder over the holidays to ensure that you lock and secure your bikes, scooters, vehicles, and houses.”
The man is set to appear at Coolangatta Magistrates Court in January, facing five counts of possession of suspected stolen property and two counts of stealing.
As the festive season approaches, residents are advised to be vigilant and secure their belongings to prevent becoming victims of theft. The discovery of this large cache of stolen goods highlights the urgent need for increased security measures, particularly for e-bikes and scooters, which are becoming prime targets for thieves.
