UPDATE: The iconic Sydney to Hobart yacht race is gearing up to kick off on December 26, 2025, with a record 129 yachts set to compete this year. This marks a significant increase of 17 entries compared to last year, including six impressive 100-foot yachts—the highest number since 2014.

Despite the tragic events of last year’s race, which saw the loss of two sailors, the spirit of competition remains unshaken. The race will begin at 1 PM AEST from Sydney Harbour, with crews prepared to tackle the challenging 1,163 kilometers (or 628 nautical miles) to Hobart.

The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia will host the event, with sailors vying for two prestigious trophies: the line honours for the first yacht to finish, and the Tattersall Cup, awarded to the overall fastest yacht after handicap adjustments.

This year, safety improvements are a priority following last year’s investigation into the tragic incidents. According to Sam Haynes, the overall winner of 2024, “There have been some quite significant changes” to enhance safety protocols. Each crew member must now wear a man overboard detection system in addition to the required personal locator beacons, and at least 50% of the crew must complete the vessel’s qualifying race.

Last year’s victor LawConnect, led by Christian Beck, is back, with Olympic champion Ian Thorpe joining the crew. Beck reflects on the challenges ahead, stating, “Last year obviously Comanche ripped their main sail in half, and we’re probably unlikely to be that lucky again this year.”

On the other hand, Haynes aims to defend his title aboard Celestial V70, having won by the second-largest margin in the cup’s history last year. “If I can hold that trophy above my head – I’ll be grabbing it for sure,” he said.

For those eager to watch the race, it will be broadcast live on Channel 9. Spectators can find prime viewing spots along the harbour, including Georges Head Lookout and Nielsen Park, alongside several beaches in the eastern suburbs, where enthusiasts can also enjoy a swim while watching the thrilling start.

Stay tuned for live updates and results as this storied race unfolds!
