URGENT UPDATE: The highly anticipated Boxing Day races in Tumut have been abruptly canceled due to an ambulance shortage, leaving fans and participants in disappointment. The Tumut Turf Club made the announcement on December 25, just one day before the event scheduled for December 26.
Tumut Turf Club president Dave Rosetta expressed regret over the last-minute decision. “These things happen and it’s not the end of the world,” Rosetta stated. “Unfortunately, at this time of year, these things happen. It’s certainly a shame to miss out on the races, but we’re all going to wake up tomorrow, and the sun is going to come up.”
Despite efforts from Tumut Turf Club, Racing NSW, and Ambulance NSW to secure the necessary medical support, Rosetta confirmed they exhausted all options before deciding to cancel the meeting. “We’re disappointed but we’re moving forward,” he added, emphasizing the need for safety and proper arrangements.
The Boxing Day races are a significant social event in the region, attracting crowds eager to enjoy the festivities. However, the club ultimately decided against hosting off-track activities due to the high costs and logistical challenges involved. “We made a decision as a committee to cut our losses,” Rosetta explained. “It allowed our committee a day off as well.”
The Tumut Turf Club has two upcoming race dates this season, with the Tumut Mile set for January 17 and the Tumut Cup on February 7. Rosetta mentioned plans to discuss potential rescheduling with Racing NSW, focusing on how to best serve the community and racing enthusiasts.
This cancellation impacts not only local participants but also the broader racing community, which had drawn a strong field of 65 acceptors for the five non-TAB races. As the news spreads, many are left wondering how this decision will affect the future of racing events in Tumut.
Stay tuned for updates as the Tumut Turf Club navigates this setback and works to secure future events. The community is hopeful for a swift resolution and a return to the excitement of racing in the near future.
