UPDATE: The Australian Jewish community is reeling from the sudden death of philanthropist and communal leader Stanley Roth at the age of 75. Roth passed away on Sunday, prompting an outpouring of tributes from organizations and individuals who revered his commitment to philanthropy and community leadership.

Roth was a dedicated life member of UIA Australia and served on the advisory board for the Combat Antisemitism Movement. His influence extended through the Stanley & Charmaine Roth Family Foundation, which funded numerous charities and initiatives aimed at strengthening communal ties and supporting vital causes.

In a heartfelt statement, Gary Perlstein, president of UIA NSW, described Roth’s passing as a “devastating loss.” He emphasized Roth’s unparalleled generosity, saying, “Stanley held a position that was truly unique. There was no one with a greater heart or deeper commitment to giving than Stanley.” Perlstein highlighted Roth’s authentic approach to philanthropy, stating, “For Stanley, it was not transactional; it was who he was.”

Roth’s profound connection to Israel and the Sydney Jewish community was particularly poignant following the October 7 attacks, which he felt viscerally. Perlstein noted, “He loved Israel as one loves a child, and he loved the Sydney Jewish community in exactly the same way.” His commitment provided a sense of safety and certainty during times of fear and uncertainty, especially following recent community incidents.

Reflecting on Roth’s leadership, Perlstein remarked, “He set the gold standard for what was asked of us and what was required of us.” Roth led not by title, but by example, demonstrating that love for community and Israel was at the core of his existence. He often expressed a belief that everyone could contribute more to the community, inspiring many to follow his lead.

The Zionist Council of NSW praised Roth’s tireless dedication, stating, “Stanley demonstrated a profound sense of responsibility to the Jewish people and the broader Australian community.” His legacy of giving and commitment will continue to resonate for generations to come.

Mark Leach, founder of Never Again Is Now, shared that Roth was instrumental in launching the organization, reflecting his enduring support for communal initiatives. “He was committed to his family, the greater good of Sydney, and the Jewish community,” Leach said.

Yigal Nisell, a member of the Combat Antisemitism Movement Advisory Board, described Roth as a natural leader whose wisdom and quiet strength will be profoundly missed. “Stanley dedicated his life to the Jewish people in Australia, and his love for the State of Israel was unwavering and inspiring,” Nisell noted.

Roth is survived by his wife, Charmaine Roth, and children Michael, Ilana, and Jessica. The community’s sorrow is palpable, as many reflect on the irreplaceable role Roth played in their lives and the impact of his philanthropic efforts.

As tributes continue to pour in, the Australian Jewish community is left to navigate this profound loss, honoring Roth’s legacy of compassion and leadership during this critical time. The need for unity and support within the community has never been more urgent.
