URGENT UPDATE: The boxing community is in mourning as Tommy Ward, known as the “Grandfather of Boxing,” announces his retirement after nearly 40 years of dedicated service in Parkes, Central West Australia. This heartfelt decision, made official on December 20, 2023, marks the end of an era for countless young boxers who have trained under his guidance at the iconic Tommy’s Backyard Boxing gym.
For almost 25 years, Tommy has voluntarily trained the town’s youth from his home gym, which started as a makeshift outdoor setup on Victoria Street. His backyard became a sanctuary for many, especially for troubled teens seeking direction. “To them, it was more than a gym; it was a second home,” Tommy reflected.
Tommy, now 69 years old, hopes his retirement will inspire someone to take over his legacy. “I don’t want to see it end or close,” he stated, but emphasized the need to prioritize his health. His journey began later in life, at age 30, when he transitioned from being an amateur boxer to a coach, positively impacting the lives of many young athletes.
The gym has seen transformative stories, including one young man who, after battling addiction, turned his life around with Tommy’s help, winning six of his seven fights. Many of Tommy’s former trainees, such as Joe Van Opynen and Mike Thurtell, credit him for providing a safe space to escape the troubles of their youth. “Tommy was always there if we needed to talk,” Joe shared.
Tommy’s impact extended beyond boxing; he fostered camaraderie and resilience among his trainees. The community rallied behind him when, in 2010, the Random Acts of Kindness show helped build an indoor gym equipped with new gear. This act of generosity ensured that Tommy could continue providing a space for youth to develop both physically and emotionally.
With the recent Christmas party on December 20, fellow trainer Chris Hancock expressed gratitude for Tommy’s unwavering commitment. “It’s all about the kids,” he said, highlighting the profound effect Tommy has had on the community. As Tommy steps back, many young boxers, including 15-year-old Ace Hancock and 17-year-old Ollie Hayes, who recently fought on December 13 at Cowra’s charity fight night, will carry forward his legacy.
Tommy’s departure leaves a void in the local boxing scene, but his influence will resonate for generations. With 10-12 members still training at the gym, his teachings will continue to inspire future champions. As the boxing world reflects on his remarkable journey, the community stands ready to honor the legacy of a true legend.
Stay tuned for updates on plans to carry on Tommy’s invaluable work and keep the spirit of Backyard Boxing alive.
