URGENT UPDATE: The Parkes sporting community is in mourning following the passing of local rugby legend Laurie “Darby” Wakefield, who died on December 22, 2025, at the age of 77. Wakefield, a celebrated figure in both rugby league and hockey, left an indelible mark on the community of Parkes, New South Wales.

The NSW Rugby League expressed their deep sadness over Wakefield’s death, highlighting his dedication to the sport. His home club, the Parkes Spacemen, also paid tribute on social media, remembering him as a “local legend” who proudly represented both NSW firsts and the Parramatta Eels.

Wakefield’s rugby career took off at the age of 22 when he was signed by the Eels in 1970. Despite his shorter stature, he was known for his exceptional talent and fierce determination. He played a pivotal role in the state team, participating in critical matches against Queensland, including a narrow loss of 16-15 in the series opener.

In a statement, NSWRL director Bob Walsh praised Wakefield’s contributions, noting, “He was very tough… big on heart.” Walsh extended condolences to Wakefield’s wife, Dawn, family, and friends, emphasizing the impact he had on those around him.

The Parkes Spacemen echoed these sentiments, stating, “We are all very grateful to have seen Laurie in August at our Old Boys day wearing the Spacemen colours. He was a true clubman to the end.”

Wakefield’s funeral service is set for 10 AM on Tuesday, December 30, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Parkes, followed by interment at the Parkes Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to attend and pay their respects during this time of grief.

As the community comes together to honor Laurie Wakefield’s legacy, his contributions to sports and local culture will be remembered by many for years to come.
