BREAKING: In an astonishing discovery, tourists aboard a boat in Victoria’s Gippsland Lakes spotted a blue-tongued lizard swimming nearly 1,000 metres from the shoreline. This rare sighting occurred last week during a wildlife tour with Lonsdale Eco Cruises, leaving observers in disbelief.
Mel Fredericks, who operates the eco tour, noted that while blue-tongued lizards are common in Australian backyards, seeing one in open water is extraordinary. “It was right out in the middle of the lakes,” she told Yahoo News. “I’ve never seen anything like it in my years of guiding.”
The lizard, appearing to struggle, swam towards the boat, prompting Mel to act quickly. “It started swimming towards us when we got close,” she recounted. “I got my net out, and it swam right into it.” This remarkable moment thrilled the international tourists, who witnessed a rescue that few could have imagined.
Authorities confirm that while blue-tongued lizards can occasionally be found in swimming pools, they typically do not swim long distances. The animal showed no visible injuries, raising questions about how it ended up so far from land. The nearest land was Rigby Island, a well-known birdwatching and fishing destination.
“We took it home and released it near our house, where there’s a wonderful little creek with bugs and things,” Mel stated, ensuring the lizard would thrive. “I’ve seen blue-tongues there before, so he’s in a very happy home now.”
