UPDATE: A man has been sentenced to a community correction order following a violent outburst against a council ranger during a dog dispute in Bathurst. Logan Freebody, aged 23, from Kelso, pleaded guilty to stalking and intimidation charges in Bathurst Local Court on November 26, 2024.
The troubling incident occurred at approximately 12:30 PM on September 5, 2024, when the ranger noticed an unleashed dog on Lambert Street. As he requested the dog’s owner to leash the animal, he was met with a barrage of threats. Freebody intervened aggressively, warning the ranger, “don’t try to intimidate my girl … get off my f–king lawn you good for nothing old c-t.”
Witnesses reported that Freebody’s actions escalated quickly, as he threatened the ranger, saying, “don’t touch me or I’ll flatten you out.” Fearing for his safety, the ranger retreated to his vehicle. Police were able to identify Freebody through a witness photo and subsequently charged him.
During the court proceedings, Magistrate Gemma Slack-Smith condemned Freebody’s behavior as “pathetic,” emphasizing the need for him to control his temper or face severe consequences. She stated, “If you don’t address your anger issues, the court’s hands will be tied.”
In defense, solicitor James Taylor argued that Freebody has recognized the inappropriateness of his actions after completing an anger management program. However, police prosecutor Cameron Ferrier countered, asserting that Freebody’s threats were serious and warranted significant concern.
Ultimately, Magistrate Slack-Smith placed Freebody on a two-year community correction order, highlighting the urgent need for rehabilitation. This decision underscores the court’s commitment to addressing public safety and the unacceptable nature of intimidation against public servants.
This incident not only raises awareness about the challenges faced by council rangers but also emphasizes the importance of addressing anger management issues in the community. As this case unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of unchecked aggression.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as authorities continue to monitor Freebody’s compliance with the court’s directives.
