Seven Turkish police officers sustained injuries during a confrontation with suspected Islamic State (IS) militants in northwest Turkey. The clash occurred early on December 4, 2023, in the Yalova province, situated south of Istanbul along the Sea of Marmara coast. A police operation aimed at apprehending the militants is currently ongoing.

Witnesses reported sporadic gunfire during the operation, which targeted a house believed to be harboring the suspects. Police had cordoned off the area surrounding the residence, and one officer confirmed that the operation was still in progress. Smoke was seen rising from a nearby fire, and multiple ambulances and fire engines were dispatched to the scene. A police helicopter was also observed flying overhead, highlighting the scale of the response.

According to Turkish state media, the wounded officers were transported to local hospitals for treatment and are not reported to be in serious condition. The operation commenced after the suspects opened fire on police as they approached the location. Special police forces were called in from neighboring Bursa province to assist in the situation.

The Turkish authorities have been actively targeting IS militants in recent weeks. Just last week, police detained 115 individuals suspected of being linked to the group. These individuals were reportedly planning attacks on Christmas and New Year celebrations across Turkey. State broadcaster TRT Haber reported that the Istanbul chief prosecutor’s office indicated that IS militants were specifically targeting non-Muslims in their plans.

Turkey has experienced significant violence linked to the Islamic State in the past. Nearly a decade ago, the group was held responsible for a series of deadly attacks on civilian targets, including a notorious shooting at an Istanbul nightclub and an assault on the city’s main airport, which resulted in numerous fatalities.

The ongoing situation in Yalova underscores the persistent threat posed by IS in the region, prompting Turkish law enforcement to remain vigilant and proactive in their operations against extremist groups. As the police operation continues, further updates are expected regarding the condition of the injured officers and the outcome of the confrontation.
