The Albury Harness Racing Club (AHRC) anticipates hosting over 5,000 spectators at its highly anticipated New Year’s Eve racing event at the Albury Paceway on December 31, 2023. Known as a premier celebration in the region, the event culminates with a spectacular 30-minute fireworks display at midnight, drawing families and racing enthusiasts alike.
AHRC president Paul Brown expressed optimism for this year’s turnout, aiming for a crowd similar to last year’s attendance of 5,200. “We are hoping to get a crowd of at least 5,000 and wouldn’t be surprised if it was as big as 6,000,” Brown stated. He noted that favorable weather conditions and a family-friendly atmosphere contribute to the event’s appeal.
The evening will feature the first race at 19:36, slightly later than usual, with a total of seven races scheduled. This timing aligns with the cooler evening temperatures, enhancing the experience for attendees.
Entertainment Highlights and Food Options
For entertainment, the club has once again secured the popular DJ Stevie Bowen, who has garnered a reputation for engaging the younger audience during the event. “Stevie B has been a big hit with the kids over the past couple of years,” Brown remarked. He added that the sight of children dancing on the track after the last race leading up to midnight has become a cherished tradition.
Food options will be plentiful, with the Lions Club providing catering alongside various food stalls. This year’s racing action will also showcase two significant events: the $14,994 2YO Jack Adams Pace and the $14,994 Wal Blezard 3YO Pace, both set at a distance of 1,770 meters.
The father-son duo of trainer Russell Jack and driver Nathan Jack will represent their Lemnos stable near Shepparton, bringing a competitive edge to the featured races. Their entries include Spartan Shield and Sahara Seakret, both of whom are last-start winners, as well as Yarraman Jolt and We Dealin Diamonds, who have shown strong performances in prior races.
Entry Details and Security Measures
Gates will open at 17:00, with entry available exclusively via Mate Street. Admission prices are set at $60 for a family pass (two adults and two children), $25 for adults, $10 for those under 17, and free entry for children under five. Concession tickets are available for $15. Both cash and EFTPOS payments will be accepted at the gate, but attendees should note that there is no ATM on-site.
Brown emphasized the importance of security and crowd management, announcing that gates will close at 21:30. No patrons will be permitted entry after this time, ensuring a smoother experience for staff and volunteers. “If people only want to come to watch the fireworks, they will still have to arrive before 21:30,” he stated.
As the AHRC prepares for a festive evening filled with racing excitement and entertainment, the club continues to solidify its status as a key event destination for New Year’s Eve celebrations in the region.
