BREAKING NEWS: Armidale Secondary College students have just clinched top honors at the Northern Schools Prime Steer competition in Walcha, showcasing their hard work and dedication in agriculture. The event, held recently, highlighted the exceptional talent of ASC’s Agriculture students and their commitment to excellence.

With a strong performance, ASC students entered the competition with seven Limousin steers, achieving remarkable results. In the under 400 kg class, they secured first, second, and third places. Their middleweight steer not only won first place but was also crowned champion. The heavyweight steer, known as ‘Rumble’, took home honors as the champion heavyweight steer and the overall Grand Champion beast of the show.

According to Mark Fisher, ASC Agriculture Teacher and Farm and Livestock Team Manager, “This event brings together schools from New England, Northwest, and North Coast for healthy competition.” He praised the range of activities at the competition, including cattle handling, parading, and judging, alongside valuable learning seminars on meat judging. Fisher extended his gratitude to Jodie Provost from Walcha Central School for organizing the event.

ASC students prepared extensively for this competition, engaging in months of hard work to ready their cattle for the show ring. They undertook various tasks such as breaking in the steers, managing husbandry procedures, and ensuring the cattle met weight and muscle specifications. The students’ commitment is designed not only to prepare them for competitions but also to enhance their employability by developing strong work ethics and teamwork skills.

“It’s just a huge team effort by the students and staff,” said Fisher. “We try to instill our motto of work hard, play hard in the livestock team.”

The competition provides students not only a chance to showcase their skills but also opportunities to socialize and network with peers from other schools. This vital interaction helps them build friendships and connections within the agricultural industry.

The success of Armidale Secondary College at the Northern Schools Prime Steer competition underscores the importance of agricultural education and community support. As ASC students continue to excel, their achievements reflect a commitment to excellence and teamwork that sets them apart.
