The Motor Trades Association of Queensland (MTA Queensland) has called for immediate action from both the Queensland and Federal Governments in response to a surge in unsafe and non-compliant e-mobility devices being sold and used throughout the state. This urgent request follows two tragic incidents that resulted in the deaths of an 8-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy.

MTA Queensland’s Chief Executive Officer, Rod Camm, emphasized the pressing danger these unregulated vehicles pose to the community. “Enough is enough. Queenslanders are dying because unsafe and unregulated vehicles are being sold and ridden with no oversight,” he stated. Camm underscored the need for enforcement, adding that “Every day these high-powered machines find their way onto our roads, bikeways and parks is another day lives are on the line.”

The association has raised concerns regarding the lack of safety standards, registration, insurance, and training associated with these e-mobility devices. Camm described the situation as “reckless” and “dangerous,” pointing to the fatalities as evidence of a failing system.

Call for Urgent Enforcement Action

While the investigation into the recent incidents is ongoing, MTA Queensland argues that the broader issue is evident—the current regulatory framework is insufficient. Camm recalled the successful resolution of the “Monkey Bike” crisis in 2019, which was addressed swiftly through targeted enforcement measures. He insisted that a similar approach is essential now for e-bikes and other unsafe devices.

“We cleaned up the ‘Monkey Bike’ crisis in 2019 within months through targeted enforcement. The same approach must be taken now with e-bikes and other unsafe devices. Every day of inaction is another day Queenslanders are at risk,” Camm asserted.

The association believes the government has the necessary tools to act; what is lacking is a sense of urgency. With the holiday season approaching, there is a heightened risk that e-mobility devices will be popular gifts for children. Camm urged immediate government intervention: “The government must act now—confiscate them, prosecute those selling them, and shut this trade down before more families are torn apart.”

The plea for action comes at a critical time, as parents may unwittingly purchase these dangerous devices without awareness of the associated risks. The MTA Queensland’s call to action highlights the urgent need for regulatory enforcement to ensure the safety of all road users.
