Huge crowds have gathered at Sydney Harbour to ring in the New Year.

UPDATE: Just hours before midnight, Sydney is set to welcome an estimated one million revelers at the iconic Sydney Harbour for its spectacular New Year’s Eve fireworks display, marking the transition into 2026. With gates opening earlier today, crowds began gathering from Tuesday evening, eager to secure prime viewing positions for the much-anticipated event.

As the clock ticks down, the atmosphere is electric. Attendees from around the globe, including visitors from India, the United States, Canada, Holland, and Hong Kong, are flocking to the foreshore, armed with snacks, drinks, and entertainment to enhance their wait. “It’s really like the Hunger Games,” one early bird remarked, highlighting the fierce competition for the best spots.

By early afternoon, many vantage points had already filled up, as the NYE dash reached its peak. According to local reports, heavy security measures are in place, with a record police presence ensuring safety for all attendees. “There’s no better spot in the world to watch the Sydney Harbour fireworks,” a boater stated, as over 3,000 watercraft of all sizes lined the harbor in anticipation.

Despite lingering fears following the Bondi Beach terrorist attack, attendees like David Mooney, 29, expressed a sense of security amidst the large crowd. “With everyone in such good spirits, you almost feel a bit of safety in numbers,” Mooney noted, reflecting the overall optimism among the crowds.

At 11 PM, the Sydney Harbour Bridge will also pay tribute to the victims of the Bondi Beach attack with a white menorah projected onto its pylons, providing a solemn moment amidst the festive celebrations.

In a disappointing twist, the City of Wollongong has canceled its New Year’s Eve fireworks due to safety concerns over dangerous swells. “Due to the height of waves impacting the break wall,” the council stated, “it has been determined that the fireworks cannot be safely released.” While the fireworks show is off, the summer carnival at Lang Park will still proceed as planned.

As the countdown to midnight continues, all eyes remain on Sydney Harbour, where traditions meet security in a celebration that promises to be unforgettable. Stay tuned for live updates and coverage of NYE celebrations across the country.
