BREAKING: An 8-year-old boy has made history today by minting the first coin for 2026, marking a significant moment in Australia’s cultural heritage. Over 500 attendees flocked to the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra this morning to witness this unique event, but it was young Julius Jungerth from Melbourne who took home the prestigious honor.
“It’s really exciting to be the first person to make their coin today,” Julius exclaimed, beaming with pride. “I can’t wait to show my friends when I get home.” This emotional milestone coincides with the celebration of 60 years since Australia transitioned to decimal currency on February 14, 1966.
The newly minted $1 coin features a commemorative design that pays tribute to the original 1966 coin by renowned designer Stuart Devlin. The artwork includes iconic Australian animals, such as the feathertail glider, frilled-neck lizard, platypus, and kangaroo, symbolizing the national pride and ingenuity that defined the era.
Emily Martin, CEO of the Royal Australian Mint, stated,
“For many Australians, the changeover to decimal currency in 1966 was more than a new way to count – it was a symbol of progress and optimism, as well as striking a piece of our own identity.”
The first coin minted by Julius will be displayed in a handcrafted case made from parquetry salvaged from the Mint’s heritage-listed floor, providing a tangible link between Australia’s past and present.
The decimal changeover remains a major success story in currency transitions worldwide, aided by the memorable “Dollar Bill” campaign and the enduring designs that have become part of everyday life for Australians.
The Royal Australian Mint will remain open throughout the holiday season, inviting the public to mint their own commemorative coins on the gallery press. For more details on visiting hours and events, check out www.ramint.gov.au.
This historic event not only highlights a significant milestone in Australia’s financial history but also inspires a new generation to connect with their heritage. As Julius’s excitement demonstrates, this moment is more than just a coin; it represents the spirit of a nation.
