URGENT UPDATE: A Central Coast man has been airlifted to the hospital after a serious snake bite while mowing his lawn in Yarramalong, just 20 minutes from Wyong. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon, and emergency services were dispatched immediately.
Authorities report that the man was bitten by a brown snake, prompting NSW Ambulance paramedics to call in a rescue helicopter for urgent assistance. He was found in critical condition and assessed on-site by a specialized medical team before being transported to John Hunter Hospital shortly after 2:15 PM. As of now, he is reported to be in a stable condition.
This alarming incident comes amid warnings of a heightened snake season, attributed to recent rainfall followed by rising temperatures. Conservationists have noted a surge in snake sightings, with one local snake catcher, Bronte Hillen, indicating that they have been extremely busy with callouts just last month. “With more developments stretching into scrub and bush, interactions between snakes and people are becoming increasingly common,” Hillen stated.
Hillen emphasizes the importance of safety measures for residents. “If you see a snake, bring children and pets inside and keep aware of the animal’s location. It’s crucial to call a wildlife service for assistance.” She added, “That snake might just move on, but it could linger for a few days, especially during breeding season.”
In light of this incident, authorities remind the public that snakes generally prefer to avoid humans. “Stay calm and remember that snakes don’t want to be around you at all. They are usually shy and timid,” Hillen advised.
