UPDATE: The final Ashes Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground is set to honor victims of the devastating Bondi Beach massacre, with a significant security presence in place. Authorities have confirmed that heavily-armed police will patrol the sold-out match starting Sunday, just weeks after 15 people were killed during a Hanukkah celebration nearby.
This heightened security operation follows the tragic events of December 14, 2023, when two gunmen opened fire at the Bondi Beach celebration, injuring dozens more. As part of the on-field tribute, a guard of honour will take place, alongside a round of applause for first responders and community members who displayed extraordinary bravery during the crisis.
Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg expressed deep sorrow, stating, “The incredible acts of bravery … at the scene of the Bondi attack were a reminder of the spirit of community and self-sacrifice that unites us as a nation.” He added, “Our thoughts remain with those affected by this devastating tragedy, and as a sport, we will continue to provide what support we can.”
In a bid to reassure the public, Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed that officers will be armed with long-arm rifles. “Many people may not be used to seeing police carrying rifles at sporting events, but our objective here is to help the public feel safe,” he stated. Lanyon emphasized that the increased visibility of police presence is designed to combat antisocial and unsafe behavior, ensuring spectators can enjoy the match without fear.
The security measures mirror those implemented at the Boxing Day Test at the MCG, where specialist police were also armed. Currently, seven individuals remain hospitalized due to the Bondi attack, with six in stable condition and one critically injured.
The alleged shooter, Naveed Akram, has been charged with 59 counts, including 15 counts of murder. He was shot by police at the scene and is recovering from injuries sustained during the incident. Tragically, his father, Sajid Akram, was also killed by law enforcement.
