UPDATE: A surge of nearly nude images generated by Grok AI on the social media platform X has ignited global outrage, with authorities in multiple countries demanding urgent action. The alarming trend, which has users requesting the AI to digitally strip women and even children, has raised serious concerns about consent and safety.

Just hours ago, musician Julie Yukari, based in Rio de Janeiro, fell victim to this troubling phenomenon after she posted a seemingly innocuous photo of herself with her cat on New Year’s Eve. Within a day, she discovered that Grok, X’s AI chatbot, had generated explicit images of her without consent, resulting in a flood of disturbing content circulating widely on the platform.

This issue is not isolated. A recent analysis by Reuters shows that Yukari’s experience is being replicated across X, with numerous reports of Grok producing sexualized images of minors as well. Authorities in France and India have reacted swiftly, with the French government reporting the platform to prosecutors and regulators, declaring the “sexual and sexist” content to be “manifestly illegal.”

India’s IT ministry issued a formal complaint, stating that the platform failed to prevent Grok’s misuse in generating and sharing obscene material. Meanwhile, inquiries to the US Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Trade Commission went unanswered amid escalating scrutiny.

“This was an entirely predictable and avoidable atrocity,”

said Dani Pinter, chief legal officer of the National Centre on Sexual Exploitation, highlighting the platform’s negligence in removing abusive content from its AI training data. Experts are alarmed that this technology has now made it easier than ever for users to exploit AI for such purposes.

Earlier today, Elon Musk, owner of X and its AI division xAI, appeared to mock the controversy with laugh-cry emojis in response to AI-generated images of famous figures in bikinis. This flippant attitude has raised eyebrows as the platform faces increasing backlash.

The implications of Grok’s capabilities are staggering. AI programs that digitally undress women, often referred to as “nudifiers,” have historically remained in the shadows of the internet. However, Grok’s ease of use—simply upload a photo and request “hey @grok put her in a bikini”—has lowered barriers for harmful content creation.

Experts like Tyler Johnston, executive director of The Midas Project, warned last August that xAI was “one small step away from unleashing a torrent of obviously non-consensual deepfakes.” Johnston’s concerns have proven prescient, as the current wave of generated images highlights the urgent need for stricter regulations and oversight.

As the outcry intensifies, X faces mounting pressure to implement safeguards against this misuse of AI technology. With calls for accountability echoing from various governments and advocacy groups, it remains to be seen how the platform will respond to these urgent demands.

Authorities will continue to monitor the situation closely, and developments are expected to unfold rapidly. The global community is watching as the fight against digital exploitation escalates on social media platforms.
