UPDATE: Ferntree Gully has just been confirmed as Victoria’s leading severe weather hotspot, according to alarming new data from AAMI. The suburb has faced devastating impacts from wind, hail, and storms over the past three years, with homes and businesses suffering extensive damage.

The analysis, covering claims from July 2022 to June 2025, highlights the urgent need for residents to prepare for future weather events. Kristian Schouten, Knox SES unit controller, emphasizes that Ferntree Gully’s location at the base of the Dandenong Ranges, combined with its dense vegetation and steep terrain, significantly heightens its vulnerability to severe weather.

Recent reports show that intense storm cells have surged in frequency, exacerbating risks in the area. Contributing factors include untrimmed trees, blocked gutters, and insufficient emergency planning, which have left many homes at increased risk of damage during storms.

Ferntree Gully topped AAMI’s severe weather rankings, followed by Rochester, Shepparton, Mulgrave, and Mornington. Major events driving claims include the catastrophic October 2022 floods, the November 2022 floods, and the severe storms in February 2024. Each event has prompted widespread claims, highlighting the community’s ongoing struggles against nature’s fury.

In light of these findings, Josh Kelland from AAMI insists that this data serves as a critical reminder for families to bolster their disaster preparedness as summer approaches. Schouten urges community members to take proactive measures: clearing gutters, securing outdoor items, trimming overhanging branches, and creating a detailed emergency plan and kit.

The Knox SES is actively working to raise awareness and prepare residents for potential future disasters. With the threat of severe weather looming, it is essential for the community to act now to safeguard their homes and loved ones.

As the situation continues to develop, residents are encouraged to stay informed and take necessary precautions. With the summer months on the horizon, Ferntree Gully’s residents must prioritize preparedness to mitigate the impacts of severe weather.
