Liverpool Football Club has announced the retirement of the number 20 jersey worn by Diogo Jota, who tragically lost his life in a car accident on March 1, 2024, near Zamora, Spain. The Premier League club revealed on March 4 that the jersey number will be retired across all levels of the club, including the women’s team and the academy.

The decision comes as a tribute to Jota, who played a significant role in Liverpool’s successes during his tenure. In a statement, the club expressed that “it was the number he wore with pride and distinction, leading us to countless victories.” Jota was instrumental in helping Liverpool secure a record-equalling 20th English league title and contributing to Portugal’s triumph in the UEFA Nations League.

Honoring a Legacy

During his time with Liverpool, Jota made a remarkable impact, featuring in 182 games and scoring 65 goals. His achievements include winning prestigious trophies such as the FA Cup and the English League Cup, along with the Premier League title. The club emphasized that this decision was made after consulting with Jota’s family, who expressed their gratitude for the gesture.

Michael Edwards, the chief executive of football for Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports, stated, “As a club, we were all acutely aware of the sentiment of our supporters and we felt exactly the same way.” He highlighted that this is a historic moment for the club, noting, “I believe this is the first time in Liverpool Football Club’s history that such an honor has been bestowed upon an individual.”

A Community in Mourning

In addition to the jersey retirement, a mural honoring Jota has been created near Anfield Stadium, adorned with heartfelt messages from fans expressing their grief and admiration. The emotional tribute reflects how deeply Jota touched the lives of supporters and teammates alike.

Players from Liverpool and the Portuguese national team attended the funeral of Jota and his brother over the weekend, paying their respects alongside family and friends. Floral tributes were placed outside Anfield as part of a collective mourning process within the community.

By retiring the number 20 jersey, Liverpool aims to ensure that Diogo Jota’s legacy remains eternal. The club’s commitment to honoring a uniquely talented individual reinforces the profound impact he made on and off the pitch.
