Tesla has officially launched its hands-free conversational AI assistant, Grok, in a software update released on July 12, 2025. This innovative feature, created in collaboration with xAI, represents a significant step in integrating advanced artificial intelligence into Tesla’s vehicles, providing drivers with a chat-style companion while on the road.
Availability and Compatibility of Grok AI
Grok comes pre-installed in all new Tesla vehicles delivered after the launch date, enhancing the overall in-car experience. Owners of older models may also gain access through an over-the-air update if their vehicles meet specific hardware and software requirements. Currently, Grok is supported on Tesla models equipped with an AMD infotainment processor and running vehicle software version 2025.26 or higher. The compatible models include the Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y, and the upcoming Cybertruck. A Premium Connectivity subscription or an active Wi-Fi connection is also necessary to utilize the feature.
Tesla has indicated that future software updates may expand compatibility to additional vehicle models. To engage with Grok, users can either tap on the App Launcher and select Grok or press and hold the voice button located on the steering wheel.
Features and Limitations of Grok
Grok is designed to interact with drivers using natural language, allowing for a more conversational experience. Users can ask questions and receive tailored responses based on Grok’s selected personality, which ranges from “Storyteller” to the more unconventional “Unhinged.”
While Tesla released a demonstration showcasing Grok’s capabilities—reportedly answering quirky questions about the humanoid robot, Optimus—it is important to note that Grok cannot currently execute commands related to vehicle operations. Traditional voice commands for functions such as climate control, navigation, or media playback remain distinct from Grok’s conversational abilities.
This feature is currently in its Beta phase and does not require users to create a separate Grok account or an xAI subscription to activate, although Tesla has indicated that this policy could change in the future.
Privacy remains a key focus for Tesla with the launch of Grok. Interactions with the AI assistant are processed securely by xAI and are not linked to a user’s Tesla account or vehicle. Conversations are kept anonymous unless a user opts to sign into Grok to synchronize their interaction history across devices.
The introduction of Grok highlights Tesla’s commitment to enhancing its in-car experience through innovative AI technology. As the company continues to evolve its infotainment features, Grok represents another step towards integrating artificial intelligence into the daily lives of drivers.
