UPDATE: Victoria remains on high alert as catastrophic bushfires wreak havoc across the state, prompting an extended fire ban. As of September 30, 2023, firefighters are battling multiple blazes that have already destroyed at least 115 structures and scorched over 300,000 hectares of land.

Harcourt residents Bonnie and Remy Sowman expressed their disbelief as they surveyed the ruins of their beloved cafe, a community cornerstone. “We’re just grateful that we got out, everybody’s safe,” Bonnie shared, recalling how they decided to evacuate as conditions worsened. They received confirmation that their home survived, but their business was not as fortunate.
As firefighters continue their battle, the Bureau of Meteorology warns that while milder weather is expected on Sunday, dangerous winds are still a concern. Senior meteorologist Dean Narramore cautioned that the wind changes could pose new threats to areas north of the fire zones. “Unfortunately, there is really no rain on the way for at least the next five to seven days,” he stated.
CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan emphasized that while conditions have eased, the fight against the fires is far from over. “Understand how the increased fire risk will impact you and ensure your fire plan covers all possible contingencies,” he advised residents.
