Queensland is poised for a significant boost in tourism and aviation with the announcement of new and expanded international flight routes. This initiative, introduced by the Crisafulli Government, is supported by the $75 million Connecting Queensland Fund and is part of the state’s long-term tourism strategy, Destination 2045. The aim is to enhance global connectivity and stimulate economic growth across various regions.

Expanded Flight Services to Enhance Connectivity

Beginning in March 2026, China Southern Airlines will increase its flights from Brisbane to Guangzhou, operating twice daily throughout the year. This expansion will add over 114,000 seats annually, contributing to an estimated $500 million in visitor spending over a three-year period. The initiative is expected to support more than 1,600 direct and indirect jobs in Queensland.

Additionally, Qantas is set to resume its international services from Gold Coast Airport in June 2026 with a new route to Auckland. Fiji Airways will also enhance its operations by introducing three weekly flights from Nadi, further strengthening connections to the Pacific and North America. Air New Zealand plans to increase its Brisbane schedule for the peak season in 2026, providing over 35,000 extra seats and expanding services to Auckland and Christchurch.

Government and Industry Support for Growth

Tourism Minister Andrew Powell emphasized the importance of improved air access in fostering growth within the visitor economy and supporting small businesses across Queensland. Industry leaders have welcomed the new flight routes, highlighting that aviation access is one of the most significant drivers of tourism growth, particularly for regional communities.

Airport operators note that the new routes reflect a robust demand and increasing confidence in Queensland as an international travel destination. The anticipated rise in visitor numbers is expected to benefit not only major cities but also regional areas, enhancing the overall economic landscape of the state.

As Queensland prepares for these developments, the integration of new international flight routes is set to play a pivotal role in revitalizing the tourism sector and supporting the state’s ongoing economic recovery.
