A fan from Newcastle, Jayden Webb, had an unforgettable experience at a concert in Sydney when he was invited on stage by British rockstar Yungblud. The event took place at the Qudos Bank Arena on January 10, 2024, where Mr. Webb showcased his unique guitar skills by playing the artist’s song “fleabag” upside down.
Mr. Webb’s journey to the stage began with a simple sign he made while attending the concert. The 25-year-old, now residing in Wollongong, hoped to catch the attention of Yungblud with his message, stating he could perform the song upside down. His efforts proved successful when the singer invited him up to join in the performance.
“It was unreal,” Mr. Webb recalled. “Being up on stage, I felt like I was in my element. It wasn’t even nerves; it was pure adrenaline.” His unexpected moment in the spotlight was made possible after a playful suggestion from his wife, Lyndsay Webb, earlier that day.
While heading home from lunch, Lyndsay joked that he should learn “fleabag” since Yungblud occasionally brings fans on stage. Though Mr. Webb initially laughed off the idea, he took it seriously and dedicated the next hour to learning the song. He first practiced it right-side up and then adapted it to his left-handed style, borrowing his wife’s guitar.
“I was more optimistic than not,” he said, recalling the brief practice session before heading to the concert. Once at the venue, they managed to fight their way to the front of the crowd.
When Yungblud began to play “fleabag,” Mr. Webb thought he might not be chosen. Suddenly, the singer stopped and scanned the audience, making eye contact with him. “He made a quip about how it seemed appropriate to play the guitar upside down while down under,” Mr. Webb said, reflecting on the playful banter that made the experience even more enjoyable.
Mr. Webb, who has been playing guitar since he was eight years old, previously performed at the iconic Sydney Opera House during the HSC showcase Encore after graduating from Cardiff High School. Now working as a metallurgist, he finds joy in keeping music as a hobby rather than pursuing it as a career, believing that could take the fun out of it.
This encounter not only highlighted the spontaneity of live music but also showcased the unique connection between artists and fans. Mr. Webb’s experience serves as a reminder of the magic that can happen when passion and opportunity collide in an electrifying atmosphere.
