UPDATE: The vibrant annual event, Sculpture Bermagui, is gearing up for its 20th anniversary, set to take place from March 7-15, 2026. This beloved festival has transformed the coastal town of Bermagui into an artistic hub despite facing immense challenges over the years, including devastating bushfires and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since its inception as a fringe event in 2006, Sculpture Bermagui has showcased an impressive array of sculptures, drawing thousands of visitors to the stunning Endeavour Point Headland and Dickinson Park. Artists from across Australia and beyond have contributed to the event, turning it into a must-visit spectacle on the Sapphire Coast‘s cultural calendar.
Current president Ivan Baker expressed his enthusiasm for this year’s landmark celebrations, stating, “The beauty of this area, combined with the wonderful and thought-provoking art, makes the exhibition special.” Baker emphasized the importance of community spirit, noting how local cafes and restaurants thrive during the event.
The festival’s resilience is evident in its history. The record-breaking exhibition in 2020 highlighted the determination of artists and the community amid disasters. Former president Paul Payten remarked on the event’s significance as a testament to the fortitude of those involved.
Sculpture Bermagui has not been without its controversies. The inaugural display in 2006, featuring Richard Moffatt’s sculpture “The Knot,” sparked heated debates and was temporarily confiscated. Over the years, other provocative pieces, including a politically charged bronze caricature of former Prime Minister John Howard, have also stirred community discussions.
As the event approaches its milestone, the artistic community is buzzing with anticipation. Renowned local sculptors Ulan Murray and Rachel Burns, winners of the People’s Prize at Sculpture by the Sea 2025, shared their excitement about engaging with the public and addressing themes like resilience and climate change through their art.
Sculpture Bermagui is a free event, inviting all to experience the breathtaking artwork and community camaraderie. As preparations continue, the town is poised to welcome visitors eager to explore the intersection of nature and creativity.
Mark your calendars for this extraordinary celebration of art and community spirit!
